My parents are going to court

If you live in The Netherlands and your parents cannot agree together on where you should live, they can go to court. This can be before or after you've moved. If it is before the move, the judge will decide whether you can move to another country. He will look at this in detail before deciding.

If it's after the move, the judge will decide whether you have to move back. This judge may only look at which country you should live in. He listens carefully to what your parents think is important for you. But he also listens to what you think about the move.

The judge may also invite you to a meeting so you can talk about this. This can feel quite scary, but it is not like a hearing with all kinds of people and your parents watching you. It's a private conversation between you and the judge, and only the clerk in the room. The judge will ultimately decide what he thinks is best for you. It could be that this is what you want, but it could also be something else. The judge will have listened to you, but may find another solution is in your best interest.

Even during a court case, your parents can still go into 'mediation'. They will then see if, with the help of someone else (a 'mediator'), they can get to agree together. The mediator will talk to your parents and help them find a solution. Of course, it is also important how you feel about the move. It can be difficult to talk about this with your parents. Therefore, the mediator may also talk to you about what you think.
