If someone needs legal assistance but cannot afford it, they are entitled to financial help. This is known as subsidised legal-aid. There are a number of conditions which must be met in order to be eligible for this.

Within the European Union there is an agreement that a request for legal-aid can be submitted for civil cases involving cross-border disputes. You can direct your request for legal-aid towards the foreign authorities and, as a result, will be able to employ national law. The foreign authority will make a decision regarding your request, on the basis of the relevant national law of that country.
